Friday: Healthy and Body: Halloween

Hello Fashionista's!! Tomorrow is Halloween and that means candy, if you like candy that is. Or dressing up and pretending to be someone else, which a lot of people enjoy doing. But that is one thing that I don't understand; why do people like pretending to be someone else only one day of the year. I prefer pretending to be different people everyday through fashion and style choices. For example, why be a princess one day a year when I can be one everyday? So I have never really gotten into Halloween very much in the dressing up or the candy, since I'm not a big fan of candy.
So this Friday's blog I will cover some easy last-minute costume ideas, because I bet some of you haven't found or made a costume yet!

1. Wear black long sleeve shirt, black skirt with black tights, and black converse shoes. Then add black nails, white makeup and blood red lips. Perfect goth look and I bet you have everything for this look (or borrow from a friend).

2. Here's a costume idea for a group of 3 or 4 Smore's:
Person 1: Marshmallows =Wear a puffy white dress with white tights and white shoes
Person 2: Chocolate =Wear dark brown shirt and pants (or skirt with tights) and brown shoes and make a sigh that says "Hershey" for the front of your shirt
Person 3 and 4: Graham Crackers =Wear light brown or tan

3. Here's my favorite idea to be a Princess: There are many looks for this but I'll give you 2 ideas. One is to put on your prettiest pink dress with skin tone tights and silver (or gold) heels. Make sure you do your makeup and hair all glam too. And don't forget the tiara!! The second idea is you can just put one your favorite outfit, heels and tiara and you are princess!!

Thursday: Celebrity Highlights: Mary-Kate and Ashley

Hello Fashionista's! Today is all about celebrities and the spotlight is on Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. I grew up with MK&A watched all their movies and TV shows, read their books, everything. They were my idols and icons growing up and I still think they are fashion icons today and will go down in fashion history. They got their start in the TV industry practically from birth with the role of Michelle Tanner on Full House (a show I have seen way too many times). All the way up to today being the co-founders of the billion dollar Duelstar Entertainment.
In this blog is about their new fashion line called Olsenboye, that will be coming out in February 2010 to JCPenney locations throughout the country. Their line is aimed at Juniors and will feature jeans, bottoms, tops, dresses, skirts, shorts, jackets, shoes and handbags. All of these pieces can be mixed to create fabulous looks and everything in the line is going to be prices between $20 to $50. So these pieces can be bought by a Fashionista on any budget! Which is fabulous. I will definitely have to check Olsenboye out in February and so do all of you. All of these pieces will be available in sizes 0-15, so every size and shape girl can find something that fits them. Olsenboye's theme is inspired by a travel destinations and looks are modeled after different cities around the world. So this look is prefect for any Fashionista what sees herself as traveling the world!
For more information check out the MK&A article or WWD.com! And look for Olsenboye in a JCPenney's near you in February!!

Tuesday: Trend: Bold Red Lips

Hello Fashionista's! One thing that I think all Fashionista's must master is the bold red lips! This look can be brought from day time to night time with just a few changes. However many Fashionista's think they can't pull off the bold red lips and that is just because they don't know how to. I am going to give you 5 tips when rocking the red lips.
Tip 1: Don't over do the rest of your makeup. When wearing red lipstick, go for a more nuetral palette for the rest of your face and nails. Brush a light powder on and go for light eyes, add mascara and skip the eye liner. Also choose clear, light or black nail polish when wearing red lipstick.
Tip 2: Use lip liner when wearing red lipstick so the lipstick doesn't bleed (feather) around your mouth. This needs to happen with red lipstick, so by adding the liner you can prevent the bleeding.
Tip 3: Choose the right shade of red. Red comes in many shades and have undertones in them. Plum and brown are some common undertones. Red with plum unertones looks better on pink skin tones and red with warm brown undertones is better for more yellow skin by warming up the face.
Tip 4: Blending lipsticks is being seen more and more by makeup artists. Say you bought a shade of red that doesn't work with your skin tone, by blending it with another one of your lipsticks (brown or plum) can change the intensity and provide you with a whole new look without spending extra cash.
Tip 5: I have also heard, "What do I wear with bold red lips?" This is easy anything that makes your lips pop! That means a more nuetral, simple outfit to show off your face. A all black outfit with white accessories and red lips looks elegant and chic. However, black and white also looks classy. Just don't wear too much color (or too much pink/red ) when rocking the bold red lips.

Stay classy, Fashionista's and rock those bold red lips!

Monday: Accessories: Umbrellas

Hello Fashionista's!!
It seems like all it does any more is rain, rain, rain. I am so tired of rain, cold, wind, wetness, clouds, etc. My umbrella has been my best friend lately and it still doesn't keep me dry. The wind blows that rain sideways. I need an umbrella bubble to stay dry. Has this happened to all of you too, Fashionista's? You just finished getting dressed in the perfect outfit, your hairs all pretty and your makeup looks hot; you step outside and all of that changes in one minute. It's awful! So all of this means that every Fashionista needs a good umbrella, cute rainboots, and a waterproof jacket. And maybe a boat if it keeps raining!
Check out this clear bubble umbrella at Target: $16.99 (bubble)
Check out these fabulous plain rain boots at Target: $24.99 (rain)

The less is more, minimalist look. Shorts, asymmetrical tops, monotone, and patchwork are all the hype for the spring. Simple silhouettes and basically neutral colors will keep spring simple and chic. Remember you shouldn't dress over the top to get noticed. If you dress simply with a pop of boldness that will get noticed even more!

Tuesday: Trend Day: Bright Colors

Hello Fashionista's!
Tuesday is here again and this week I'm all about the bright colors. Today I am wearing a boot cut that look like wide leg jeans, a long dark purple tank with a bright color-popping yellow with tiny purple hearts button-down. I absolutely love my bright yellow button-down. For my hair today, actually this season I love it long with blunt-cut bangs! I think it looks so fabulous and cute and it really is a great cut for my face. So Fashionista's I want to see all of you out there rocking a bright color. It can be a top, jeans, shoes, a great bag, headband, nails, jewelry, or something else that you love to wear. Remember it's great to stand out for all the right reasons. As long as you're still unique and true to yourself. So go out there and stand out on this fabulous Tuesday!

Monday: Accessories: DIY Bracelet

Hello Fashionista's!

It's the beginning of another week, after a great weekend. Today is accessory day! And I'm very happy about what I found over the weekend to share today. A do-it-yourself bracelet! I love making my own fashions and accessories, especially to show off and have people ask me where I got it. And I can say "I made it!" I love being able to say that.

This DIY project is a fabulous gem bracelet that you can make in 3 steps with 3 main tools.
1. The first thing you need to do is gather your materials. Which include many gems (at least 30), Bond Glue, and any color thick ribbon that can tie around your wrist. You can find all of these materials at your local hobby store or even around the house.

2. Now its time to begin. Start by cutting a piece of ribbon about 16 inches long. Make sure you snip both ends on a diagonal slant to keep the ribbon from fraying.

3. Next lay out the ribbon on the table and arrange the gems the in a unique pattern you'd like them to appear in. Overlap the gems for a cool effect. Make sure you leave 4 inches open at each end. so you'll be able to tie it.

4. Finally apply the glue to the back of each gem and carefully attach each gem to the gibbon in your pattern. Make sure you hold each gem in place for a minute to secure it before attaching the next one. When you are finished let your new bracelet dry overnight, so it doesn't fall apart!

Fashionista's enjoy this fabulous bracelet that you made and show it off!

Friday: Health and Body: Cold Weather

Hello Fashionista's!

Another Friday is here and it's still freezing outside. I think we have skipped right over fall this year and went straight to winter. Which by the way, I HATE winter. I want it to stay between 75 and 85 degrees all year around, even at night. Which means I have to move, and I plan to as soon as I graduate in May!

In Health and Body today I will talk about how to stay warm and healthy when the cold weather moves in for good. Ways to stay warm include: Winter jackets, boots, gloves, scarves and layers, Hot chocolate and warm cookies :], Fireplaces, blankets and pillows, and hibernating, which means just stay inside under your blankets until April! I really wish I could do that last one! :]
Ways to stay healthy when it's cold: since it's too cold to go outside and be active stay in and clean, do sit-ups, or exercise DVD's. In the colder monthes you might find yourself eating more to stay warm, which is fine if you make healthy choice or fresh fruits/veggies or pita and hummus. You also might find yourself getting sick, remember to wash your hands more, take warm showers, eat healthy with some exercise and stay away from sick people or people in genernal. :]

Stay warm, healthy and classy, Fashionista's!

Wednesday: Fashion News: Karl Lagerfeld

Hello Fashionista's

This wednesday's fashion news is about Karl Lagerfeld and what he thinks of the models at his and other runway shows. First a little background on Karl Lagerfeld. He is 71 and a German designer who designs for Chanel. In a recent interview he stated, "People perfer to look at 'skinny models' and those who do not are 'fat mummies'". In this magazine interview he is repsonded to the modeling industry and other designers who are opting to go for a more healthier, realistic look on the runways. He goes on to say, "...the decision by Germany's most popular women's magazine was "absurd" and driven by overweight women who did not like to be reminded of their weight issues". I think it is trying to that the runway shows shouldn't use models that are bigger because that is just saying to women that if you gain weight and are unhealthy that's okay. When it really isn't.

Carl Lagerfeld is known in the fashion world as always having super skinny, emaciated-looking models in his shows and even Lagerfeld himself has been moving toward a skinny body type. He has dropped a lot of weight on his strict low-carb diet and has shared his tips with others. One thing he said was, "I only like the things that I'm allowed to eat, so it's not like I have to avoid anything, which is how I don't put on weight".

Another thing that Lagerfeld says is that models are not anorexic, they want to be skinny to get work and be able to walk in the shows. He says that not all models are super skinny, don't eat or use drugs. Just a select few that get brought to the media's attention. He backed up his point by adding, "Ninety per cent of them are quite normal, properly proportioned girls with less fat and more muscles who also eat pizzas and burgers".

Here's the article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2009/oct/12/lagerfeld-size-zero-thin-models

Fashionista's, do you agree with Karl Lagerfeld's point of view of do you want to see healthy or realistic models represented in runway shows and in top fashion magazines?

I think designers should use healthy models that are an appropriate size in proportion to their height and body for different body types in societies (in Europe and the US). I don't think there should be models that are the average size of the US women's size which is a 12 or 14; because that isn't healthy. Models cast for shows should be different heights, ranging from 5' to 6', to show women of all heights that something is out there for them.

I'm interested to hear what the rest of the Fashionista's out there think!!

Friday: Health and Body: Vegetarianism

Hello Fashionista's!!
It's Friday again and you know what that means, health and body advice. This Friday I am going to talk about a topic that has become very popular lately, Vegetarianism!

To start off, I have been a vegetarian for 2 and a half years and it's the best decision I've ever made. A lot of people think being a vegetarian is hard, but actually its not.
*
The Benefits
Why being a vegetarian is healthier for you? Done right a vegetarian diets are low in fat and high in vitamins. How being a vegetarian is better for the environment? Raising cows on large farms and trucking meat to faraway stores causes a lot of pollution. How being a vegetarian is kinder to animals? Big farms and feedlots keep animals in caged or overcrowded conditions. How being a vegetarian helps you? Being a vegetarian can save you money, since animals products are generally more expensive than their vegetarian alternatives. Also its been proven that vegetarians are healthier, weigh less, live longer and are less prone to the top diseases in America (obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc).
*
The Choices
Choosing food to eat is the best part of being a vegetarian. There are so many yummy options. Besides the basic things like pastas, noodles, rice and salads; there are many other choices out there. There's lot's of meatless products at your local grocery store from yummy Boca varities to Morning Star and Amy's. You can find meatless burgers, faux chicken, meatless crumbles, faux hot dogs, etc. There is also tofu which is so tasty, ecspecially marianated in teriaki sauce, baked in the oven and served over brown rice with broccoli. You can create different variations of veggie stir-fry and experiment with your own creations. Also hummus is a yummy snack with pita chips, carrots or pretzels! Hummus is my new favorite food. Another one of my favorites is vegetarian lasagna. Restrauants and grocery strores keep getting in new options for vegetarians, so are choices are endless.
*
One thing to remember...
Always make sure you get all your nutrients in each day. Most aren't too hard, if you still have dairy products like me. I still have milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream. (Vegans don't include these.) But some things to watch out for are protein, B12, and fiber. Fiber is listed becasue vegetarians usually get too much from grains, veggies, etc fiber is one thing to make sure you don't get too much of. B12 won't be a problem if you have dairy. Protein can be included with veggie burgers and dairy. Also like anyone make sure you do exercise and get outside becasue everyone needs a little (at lest 30 minutes) of activity in their day.
*
If you have any questions about being vegetarian, leave your comments!
Check out www.GoVeg.com for more information
Stay classy and try a vegetarian diet, Fashionista's!

Thursday: Celebrity Highlights: Hilary Duff

Hello Fabulous Fashionista's!

Guess what it's Thursday! Which means the first edition of Celebrity Highlights. I am going to start things off with my favorite actress, Hilary Duff. I have been a fan of her's since middle school when Lizzie MaGuire started. Hilary Duff has had a very successful career from actress to singer/songerwriter, designer and community activist. A few years back she created her first line Stuff by Duff for Kohl's. And this past September her new line hit stores, Femme for DKNY jeans.
I am going to cover Hilary's new line Femme. In her line she created sweater tunics with cowl necks which can detach and t-shirts with necklaces made into them. For pants there are skinny jeans with belt loops that can be adjusted to fit wide or skinny belts and "cozies" that layer like scarves. Hilary's new line seems perfect for fall, so go out there and pick up one or a few of these perfectly unique pieces!
*
Fashionista's I know you all want to check out Hilary's new line, so I included the link to DKNY. http://www.dkny.com/nshop/product.php?page=viewall&view=keyword&section=womens&category=apparel&groupName=&keyword=femme

Wednesday: Fashion News -Spring Lines

Hello Fashionista's!
*
This weeks lastest fashion news is all about the ready to wear shows for spring lines hitting the runways. Chanel and Valentino are the designers I will cover this week. Check out http://www.wwd.com/fashion-week/spring-ready-to-wear-2010/ to stay up-to-date on all of the designers collections for Spring 2010. Also to look more in-depth at the Chanel and Valentino Collections.

The Chanel collection designer by Carl Lagerfeld is al about the country. On the runway the looks were accompanied with silver tree branches in the models hair and high heeld clogs (which Lagerfeld named 5 o'clock clogs) were striking. He said that the look is modeled after Marie Antioinette. Also another designer, Lily Allen joined the forces for the spring line to give it a little bit more. Some examples of the looks are floral frocks with airy appendages, safari shirts with black lace skirts and hand knits with poppies to bring a country cozy chic-ness into the mix. For a more professional look try a suit with a chort cut skirt with a jacket. Jackets witll be seen worn a variety of ways from short to long, belted or loose or even with full sleeves. Overll the Chanel collection with resemble a high-chic country girl style in the spring.
Valentino's designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli really hit he mark on Valention's visoion of feminine chic and romantic beauty this season according to Women's Wear Daily. Their inspriation for their spring looks came from Alice in Wonderland. They wanted to to create "a fairy tale like a fragile gifure walking through an enchanted garden, but with a hint of danger". The colors that will be seen are more wilted and dusty in gray, nude and blush and they create a dusk-y, twilight effect with soft organza dresses that a structured with petals and ruffles. The looks have a pinafore construction with big bows in the back that look like a fairy tale princess look without looking to young. Since they went for a more fairy tale look, this collection was aimed at a younger auddience with shorts and rompers designed for evenings out. You won't see anyone lunching or lounging in these pretty pieces, I can bet you on that. So if you're looking for a look for an elegant night out check out this gorgeous collection from Valentino.

Tuesday: Trend of the Week: Interviews

Hello Fashionista's!
*
Tuesday is here and that's means Trend of the Week. This week I've decided to talk about professional dress and interviews. What people wear to work and on interviews says a lot of them. You should present your best self on an interview and go all out. That means nice top, structured jacket, dark or neutral dress pants or skirt, tights, and low heals. Of even a suit if you work in a more traditional or conservative work environment.
*
On the interview you should present yourself to the best of your ability. That means act professional, have detailed and in-depth answers to the interviewer's questions, ask your own questions and be respectful. All of these things should be common sense, but you would be surprised at how many people don't follow these things. It's actually shocking people that don't follow these things get jobs. Overall just remember Fashionista's you are what you wear and be do judge you base on your first impression. So always make it a great one!
*
Since I'm in college, I'll tell you how I see students dress for class, presentations, activites, and even interviews. The answer is not very appropriately. I mean I can let class slide sometimes, but the other things, no. I've seen some students that look like they rolled out of bed and came to do a presentation in front of the class. I mean really, you want to do a presentation in sweats, does that even sound like common sense to you? Or the situation I see more, going to work in sweats or baggy/hole-y jeans. Yeah you work on campus, but don't you want people to take you seriously? I have a lot to say about how I see students on campus, I just don't understand why people want to look sloppy and lazy. Doesn't eanyone look in the mirror before they leave?!?
*
Remember Fashionista's a first impression says everything about you to people who don't know you, make it the best one you can. Fashionista's on that next interview you go on, make sure your first impression, intelligence and behavior get you your dream job!
*
As always, stay classy, Fsahionista's!

10 M&M's
Some examples of how to pair these up are some baked tortilla chips with bean salsa, yogurt with M&M's, string cheese and whole grain crackers, almonds with berries, or a latte with grahan crackers. Or any other combination that looks yummy to you!!
Next Friday check for a delicious receipe, maybe?!?

Hello Fashionista's
I've decided to try a weekly format and I will try my best to stick with it. I am busy just like all of you, so if I miss one day I will more than likely post it the next day along with the current day. So make sure you check here daily. Because FashionGirl will be daily now! Yay!

Here is what I want to talk about each day. This might change if I have something else important that comes up during the week.
Monday: Accessories Make the Look
Tuesday: Trend of the Week
Wednesday: Fashion News
Thursday: Designer and Celebrity Highlights
Friday: Health and Body
Saturday: Let Yourself Shine in Cheap Chic Style
I will start tomorrow with a Health and Body blog about some
healthy snack ideas you can try this weekend!

As always, stay classy, Fashionistas!
